Twice in One Night!!!

I blocked out an evening in Lorraine's daytimer - I just wrote, "Busy," in there, so, of course she knows that this is probably her date night for April. And it turned out that it was.

She questioned it, as she usually does, about what to wear, where to meet at, all those logistical questions. I told her to get dressed up in black and be ready to go by 6:30pm.

About 3 weeks before, I had purchased a couple tickets for the ballet that was coming to town. She had no clue, I could tell. Boy was I fired up!

The big night arrived, and we went downtown to the theatre, and Lorraine had no idea where we were going, or what event was playing that night.

It was pretty exciting, hanging out with all the artsy looking people, drinking wine, pretending like we fit in, you know the feeling. Smiling and nodding at strangers, thinking we're all that. Pathetic, really.

So this thing starts. I made it through the first Act, but not the second. I fell asleep on Lorraine's shoulder with about 15 minutes to go, and woke up at the end when the cast was receiving their much-deserved, standing ovation. Scared the be-jesus out of me.

Of course, after wiping the drool off my chin, face, neck and hair, and remembering where I was, the hypocrite I am, joined the thousand others standing, cheering and yelling and clapping. I had that wild horse, eye thing going on as well.

It felt like we had just witnessed the Canucks win the Stanley Cup for the first time in their 37 year history, or Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were up there belting out, "Stairway." Unbelievable. I was the only one in the building holding my cigarette lighter in the air.

Lorraine enjoyed it, but that's not what matters. When setting up a date for you and your lovely, do something that you can at least tolerate, yourself. It helps. Remember, it's for the both of you...

I did appreciate the athleticism, strength and fitness of those folks. Very, impressive. I can certainly respect that; however, I went to the ballet twice that night: It was my first time and last time.
